Roadtrip!

FREEDOM, INDEPENDENCE, AND THE AMERICAN ROADTRIP

In 2005, I quit the Navy and decided to move to Japan. Before I moved to Japan, I decided to pursue a long time dream of visiting all the places in the United States that I had always wanted to see.  Since I was a small child I enjoyed looking at the map of the United States and wondering what it was like in other parts of the country.
I bought a van and filled it with supplies; food, water, medicine, clothes for hot and cold weather, a gas stove, cooking equipment, a toolbox, an air mattress for sleeping, a table, chairs, and a tent.
Along the way I stopped at camping grounds and rest stops to take a shower and do laundry.  Sometimes I parked in Walmart shopping center parking lots to spend the night.  Walmart is open 24 hours, so I could use the restroom anytime of the night, and the parking lot was well-lit with security cameras. Sometimes, it was scary when I couldn’t find a good place to stop, so I just had to park on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.  As I slept I could hear animals prowling around outside of my van.
It was a time before everyone had GPS on their cell phones. I had a GPS device connected to my laptop with map software, but it often broke and I got lost as a result. But getting lost sometimes ended up in me finding a new and exciting place and meeting interesting people.
At times it was exhausting because I had to keep a tight schedule if I wanted to see everything on my list in 3 short months. Sometimes I had to shell out some cash and stayed at a hotel to recharge.
Overall, it was a great adventure, and something I will remember for the rest of my life. I got to see almost every major landmark in the U.S.A and saw so many beautiful sights and met so many interesting people.
If you ever have the chance to travel to the U.S., I definitely recommend renting a car and going on a road trip of your own, even if it is a small one.  Going on a road trip in the U.S.A is part of American culture and the American experience!
